Here's the setup on the reviews. Either I'm recommending Run, don't walk, away or Run, don't walk, toward the theater to see these movies. It's pretty simple and sums up my thoughts nicely.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End: Run, don't walk, away...When I said I couldn't be more disappointed in a summer movies, I forgot about this one. Reason is, I feel asleep during it. This is only the second time I considered walking out on a movie. The other time was Tomb Raider. Both Pirates and Transformers suffer from the same ailment. Commonly known as, no story / plot syndrome.
Live Free or Die Hard: Run, don't walk, away... LAME-O 4.0, I mean Die Hard 4.0. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I didn't find this movie to be all that great. Especially with all the internet buzz about how good this was gonna be even though it's PG-13. The entire premise of the movie didn't sit well with me, and neither did the villain(s). McClane's one liners didn't help either. Watch 16 Blocks if you want to see a Willis action flick.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: Run, don't walk, toward...This is the best movie of the series so far. Director, David Yates does a good job of setting the tone and pace of the film. Even though this is movie 5 of 7, the movie still progresses at a nice pace. At the end there is a wizard fight scene that is brilliantly done. Phoenix has enough reveals in to keep you coming back for more.
Knocked Up: Run, don't walk, toward...Easily one of the best & funniest movies of the year. It's very funny and at times, very poignant. This may be because I'm getting soft due to my impending fatherhood, but nonetheless, it's a really good. It's easily one of the funniest movies I've seen in a while. For the funniest, continue reading the post. When it comes to suspension of disbelief, this movie may top all other summer flicks. I'd have an easier time believing giant robots invading earth, and magical wizards then Seth Rogen getting with Katherine Heigal, but I digress.
King of the Summer
Superbad: Sprint, don't walk, toward...For as god awful as Transformers & Pirattes 3 was, Superbad was badass, as in great fucking movie. Xia and I were lucky enough to get an advance screening pass from my friend Andrew. Turns out not only was it an advance screening, but also a press screening. Some of the writers in the crowd were recognizable, but I can't remember the names and faces. Essentially, it's a love story about two high school friends, told during the craziest day of their lives. Easily lives up to and possible even surpasses, 40 Year Old Virgin, and Knocked Up. The movie is just old school crude, crass, & vulgar humor. While the movie hearkens back to 80s flicks in the genre, there is no nudity. This is a must see, and easily earns it's R rating. This movies goes right to the top of my list of best comedies. Here's a clip, thats not safe for work.
Two weeks ago I was able to score tickets to one of the 5 borough premieres of Spider-Man 3. My screening was held at AMC Bay Plaza 13 Cinema in The Bronx on April 30th.
There are ton of reviews on the net, deconstructing scenes, blasting the film and equally praising it. What I find amazing is that most of the reviews are on point, the good and bad ones. Early on the mixed reviews poured in and it wasn't until I saw the film that I really understood why that was the case. Not to give any spoilers, but the movie has everything but the kitchen sink in it. That's mainly the cause of the bad reviews. Viewers are expecting to see one thing, and are disappointed when it doesn't "pay off". I'd argue that it does "pay off", just not in the way you wanted or expected it to. When you watch it with an open mind, without any mental baggage, it's not nearly as bad as you're lead to believe. In the end Spider-Man 3 will go down as one of the most polarizing films in recent memory.
Hopefully, Guy and I can get a podcast (spoiler filled) review posted in the coming days. My computer problems may prevent this though. The final word on the third Spidey film is 2.99 outta 4 THWIPS! There is lots of room for improvement, but it's definitely worth the ticket price.
Where it ranks in the Spidey-verse: Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, Spider-Man 1 (Have you seen it lately? Try to rewatch it.)
Spidey 3 is better than: any Superman other than 1 & 2, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, any Blade, & X-Men 3.
[Edit 1: Just saw the movie again, this time with Xia. She gives the movie a B. She thought the movie dragged on at times, but ultimately enjoyed it. I didn't mention it in my original reivew, but this movie has the best Team-Up action of any comic book inspired film.]
[Edit 2: Box Office Mojo has a comprehensive section up on thier site call Spider-Man Special Briefing. It features, "breaking box office news about Spider-Man 3 to a look back at the past movies including news, reviews, charts and commentary, this briefing provides a comprehensive overview of the Spider-Man franchise." Also of note, as of Sunday May 6th, Spidey 3 has brought in $375M worldwide. Between the production buget and marketing costs, it puts Spidey 3 in the black by $17M. Superhero Hype has a article up breaking down what the film has accomplished so far.]
